After the deluge 18/06/2010
Pain comes from seeing how arrogant you've been, and pain brings you out of this conceit. A child cannot be born until the mother has pain. You are pregnant with real trust. The words of the prophets and saints are midwives that help, but first you must feel pain. To be without pain is to use the first person wrongly. "I" am this. "I" am that. "I" am God, like al-Hallaj, who waited till that was true to say it. "I" at the wrong time brings a curse. "I" at the right time gives a blessing. Rumi CommentsHelene, I love what you wrote here. The message is an important one for each of us to take to heart. So often we fall into waiting to be rescued, when in fact we must commit to facing the pain and moving through it, not being lifted out of it. I was just reading an interview with Thick Nhat Hhan in which he says much the same. Your image perfectly represents this process. Within the vortex of pain and suffering and confusion, there is actually much light.
